It is christmas eve. when i was younger, i used to like to hang a stocking. i thnk i liked the things that were put in the stocking more than i did the presents under the tree. i'm not sure why. if i was going to hang a stocking tonite and wake up in the morning with something in it, i wonder what i'd want. first of all let me say it would be a @hanes sock and not really a stocking, but who's keeping track? anyway....i think what i'd want in my stocking is some magic formula or cure to the debate surrounding homelessness, welfare and helping the poor. i think the debate itself bothers me more than the problem. for politicians and people to debate the issue of helping the homeless and poor is a reflection on our society today. there shouldn't even be a debate. we as americans and human beings shouldn't even question helping. we support the cruelty to animals causes. we give foreign aid to other countries in times of need. we save the trees. we save the whales. we save the seals. we save the rain forests. we have a save the...for alot different things. do you really in all good faith want to tell me that any of those causes are more important or have a more redeeming quality or higher returns than helping and saving a human being at the lowest point of their life? i think at christmas is as good a time as any to make this an issue. homelessness or poverty has no color. it has no religion. it has no political agenda. it has no ethnic background. it's not illegal. it's a blight on our great country and a blight on us as citizens of this great country. we are by far the richest and most capable country in this world. but we can't seem to solve the very basic problem of preventing people from dying simply due to the fact that they are poor or homeless or both.
so yes santa. leave me a magic formula to end this debate. leave me a magic formula to catalize this nation and pique the heart of every american to end the debate and start taking the action to end this problem...forever. i don't want to wake up on 12/26 and read that a man or woman froze to death because they slept outside tonite. i don't want to hear of a child going to bed hungry when this nation has an abundance of food. i don't want to read about a family sleeping in a car because they can't afford an apartment. i want to change the context of this blog into something more positve.
i'll hang my hanes sock up tonite. i hope santa know i'm homeless and have no chimney.
see you around town
