these were tweets today. all of this in one hour and fifteen minutes. i'm not sure if the people that made these tweets really believe them or not. it may be that they just thought they sounded good and would make a good tweet for someone to retweet or favorite. but the fact that they made them says that they do think that or believe that to some extent. most of them are incorrect either in substance or fact. but that doesn't change the fact that they may very well believe them. i know you've probably seen these tweets before. some of them more than once. most of them you've seen in some form or another. you may even believe them or think them or have enough doubt that you don't disregard them.
and that brings me to my point. the war on poverty and homelessness can't be won as long as this thought process is prevelant in america. you have to bring the american people in at the grass roots level in order to win the war on poverty. the federal government cannot win it for us. otherwise, we'll keep spending money, keep extending programs, and keep losing the war. yes...we may win some battles. but ultimately the war will be lost due to non support or indifference. or worse...like most wars, the american people may become weary of it and demand to end it without a resolution. we have to find a way to make them understand exactly what we're fighting....exactly why we're fighting it....and exactly how we're fighting it. if we can do that...then they may very well become active participants and fully engage in this shameful war that none of us should ever have to fight.
this is a war we can't afford to lose. it kills in more ways than one. it kills the spirit. it kills the future of men and women. it kills children. it kills the elderly. at best it cuts life short and stunts what may be a bright and promising future. it kills, slowly...but surely. and yes...it can and has spread to the middle class and beyond. fifty years....we can't afford to surrender.
see you around town
