Homeless And The Summer 2016

summer is approaching and with it a whole new set of problems and difficulties for the homeless. winter may seem like the most difficult and often brutal time for the homeless, but the summer can be just as hard on the homeless. the days can seem endless when the temperatures climb into the nineties. the nites can be long and restless when it's hot and humid. it can be just as dangerous as the most frigid nite in the winter.

there are some things that the homeless truly need in the summer, not only for the bare comfort level, but also for survival. socks are just as, if not more important for the homeless in the summer. when it's hot and your feet constantly sweat, it can be not only extremely uncomfortable but dangerous to your health not to have access to clean socks. your feet become a pool of bacteria when you constantly sweat during those hot days and nites. underwear is the same. it's vital to have clean underwear. water and/or juice is another vital thing to have during the summer. you can become dehydrated very quickly in the hot temperatures. the homeless often have no respite or escape from the heat, so hydration is critically important. sunscreen and lip balm are another essential to have when you are constantly outdoors in the sun or the shade. it's not only a health consideration but a comfort consideration also. hats and sunglasses are a luxury for the homeless, something we take for granted. but if you've never been in the hot sun for an extended period of time without a hat on, it can be very painful. there are other things, some minor, some major. the point is summer does not provide relief for the homeless, it just changes the parameters of survival.

i don't try to concentrate on the homeless within the city. they can find relief. i visit the campsites and the homeless who reporters and bloggers fondly call the hidden homeless. they're out there. they're not coming in to the mission or any other shelter. they've chosen to remain on their own. it's not mine to judge whether or not it's the correct thing for them and it's not my position to try to explain why they do this. it's only my position to try and provide whatever comfort i can and try to give them whatever i can to increase the chances for their own survival and health. from chrisitiana to brandywine to new castle....they're out there. i know where they are. if i don't.....i seek them out. we try to make sure they have water, some other form of hydration such as powdered gatorade and one or two of the things i mentioned above.

so here we are again....facing another summer. we are going to try and stock up now. memorial day and hot weather is approaching. we...i....need your help in doing this. somehow we manage to scrape by again and again and continue to do what we do...help the homeless when and where we can. we operate solely on whatever small donations we get and with our own money. but this year is different. i am not going to once again put myself at risk to continue doing this. so yes...we need your help and your money to continue this year. anything amount helps and any amount would be appreciated. we have no overhead except for gasoline so 100% of whatever we collect goes straight to the homeless.no salaries,no expenses....just helping the homeless.

go to the donate section of this website and hit the donate button. it's fast, it's simple and it's secure. we use paypal for these reasons. you can use your paypal account if you have one or you can securely use your credit or debit card. help us contnue today if you can.

thanks

I Am One Of You

homeless. that's what you see when you look at me. i'm not sure what you think, but by your body language, your expression and your eyes, that is what you see. but there's more to me, much more.

i was an athlete who could run like the wind. i obtained a baseball scholarship to attend college where i obtained a degree in industrial distribution. i did the same things you did in college.i fell in love just as you did many years ago. my wedding day was probably much like yours. full of joy, family, friends and celebration over a new life just beginning. i witnessed the birth of my children. i held out my hands and god handed me my child as i looked in wonder at this precious human being that was part of me. i was the first to hold her, the first to kiss her soft, tiny cheek and the first to tell her that i loved her. i built my first house with my own hands from the ground up. my children were raised in that house and it still stands proud and strong and inviting. i have ridden horses across open fields on bright blue days. i have walked in the woods and smelled the scent of nature all around me. i have watched as deer strolled close to me in those woods and rabbits and squirrels ran for cover at my coming. i have fished with my children endless hours while we camped by a lake or a river. i have done the things you have done, i have had the same emotions you have had, i have lived my life just as you have lived yours.

you see a homeless person. but take pause and look closer. you will see a kindred spirit. stop for a moment and look straight at me...you will see a man who has lived a life full of happiness, wonder, amazement, love, contentment and all the things that you have experienced in your life. you see a homeless person, but if you don't look at me, you won't see me.

see you around town
